Common Elderberry, Sambucus canadensis
Common elderberry is a large, multi-stemmed, native shrub with showy white flower clusters in mid-summer, followed by juicy, blue-black fruits. Native to eastern North America, Elderberry is at home on streambanks or ponds, and is often seen along rural roadsides. While it prefers moist areas, it is quite tolerant of a wide range of soils in full to partial sun. Grows about 10 feet tall and spreads to form a thicket. Zones 3-7.
NOTE: Shrubs arrive in bundles of 25 seedlings that are approx. 12-18 inches tall. Shrubs are NOT full-sized upon pick-up. Photos show full-sized examples of the species.
